The piercing whistle of a train awakened her, breaking the hard rhythm of steel wheels on track. Katy looked around, regaining her bearings. 'Oh, that's right,' she recalled. 'I'm on the sleeper car of a train.'
Just then she heard a knock on the cabin door. "Tickets please," a deep voice demanded. "Please have your tickets ready."
She slid open the compartment door, and looked up at the very tall conductor, who was wearing a very tall hat.
He punched her ticket, glancing at it momentarily, and then gave a start. He looked at the ticket again, more carefully this time, and then quickly studied her.
"Katy!" the conductor exclaimed, rather excitedly. "All of Choo Choo Town has been waiting for you! It's the next stop."
He pulled back the curtain as the train slowed down with a loud screech of its brakes. Trains of every shape and color were outside her window.
"The people of Choo Choo Town have lots of ways to go places, but nothing to do when they get there," he said.
Katy giggled. "You mean they need me to get them on the right track?"
The very tall conductor laughed a very tall laugh. "So to speak."
